Make a Slate Countertop

Slate is a beautiful natural stone that is used for many building applications including roofing, flooring and counter surfaces. Slate is durable and waterproof, making it an ideal material for a countertop surface. You can make a slate counter tops for your home using slate tiles. Slate comes in a wide variety of colors including black, blue, gray, green, purple and red as well as mottled combinations of colors. Select a color that will complement the rest of your room’s features such as the walls, floors and cabinets. This plan calls for a small 24-by-48-inch countertop, but you can modify the dimensions to suit your size requirements.

Instructions as follows:

Firstly, place the medium density fiberboard, or MDF, panel flat on a work surface. Center the fiber cement board on top of the MDF panel. Make sure that the edges of the two materials are flush.
Secondly, drive coated screws through the fiber cement board into the MDF every 4 to 6 inches in rows across the entire surface with a screw gun.
Thirdly, spread an even layer of tile mastic over the surface of the fiber cement board with a notched trowel. Lay the slate tiles into the mastic starting at one side of the assembly and working your way across in rows to the opposite side. Insert tile spacers between the corner joints of the tiles to ensure even spacing. Allow the mastic to dry overnight.
Fourthly, remove the tile spacers with your hands and apply grout between the slate tile joints by dragging a grout-filled grout float across the surface of the slate at a slight angle. Allow the grout to dry for 15 minutes.
Fifthly, dampen a sponge in a bucket of water. Wash the surface of the slate tiles off with the sponge. Wring the sponge out and continue to wash off the slate until the water comes out clear.
